Wilbert Gene (Willie) Meier
Wilbert Gene Meier, 87, of Brighton, Colorado passed away Tuesday, June 15, 2021 at his home. Wilbert was born on October 2, 1933 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, to Anna and Henry Meier Jr., the youngest of six children. He was raised and attended public schools in the Scottsbluff-Gering area. In 1954 Wilbert moved to Denver. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1955 for a two-year stint, serving stateside and in Honolulu, Hawaii. After his discharge from the Army in 1957, he returned to Denver, where he worked most of his life in the construction business, operating various large pieces of equipment. He was a member of Operating Engineers Local Union No. 9.
He married Vera Billinger on July 1, 1961. They made their home in northwest Denver for many years, and in later years lived in Brighton. No matter where they lived their home was their pride and joy. Together they raised their two children, Paula (Meier) Snyder, and Bryon Meier. Wilbert and Vera loved polka dancing their whole lives and spent many happy hours dancing around the Denver Metro area. Willie loved collecting old family documents and pictures, and was happy to share his finds with you when you visited his home. He also liked to travel, and he and Vera spent their retirement years driving their camper around the southwest part of the US as well as all over Colorado, camping and fishing.
Wilbert is survived by his son, Bryon Meier, of Brighton, and his daughter, Paula (Greg) Snyder of Pine Top, Arizona, grandson, Dallas Miller of Colorado Springs, and many nieces and nephews.
Wilbert was preceded in death by his wife Vera, his parents, Anna and Henry Meier Jr., and all five of his siblings, brothers, LeRoy Meier and Don Meier of Denver, and sisters, Marion Keller, Esther Ott, and Caroline McCole, and two nieces, all of Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
