April 6, 1933 ~ December 16, 2020 (age 87)

Obituary

Gwendolyn Alice Gates was born in Pueblo, Colorado on April 6, 1933 to Lois Elizabeth Allison and Wilfred (Biff) Kenneth Gates, the oldest of three siblings. She and her family moved frequently, living in Rocky Ford, Craig, and Great Bend, Kansas.  In 1948, the Gates family settled in Brighton where her father established a drug store. Gwen graduated from Brighton High in 1951 and then attended the University of Colorado, Boulder. Deciding that her passions lay beyond the realm of academia, she moved to Manhattan, New York where she lived for two years.

Although Gwen and George Stieber, her future husband, knew each other before she left to New York, it was upon her return that their love story began. Upon hearing that Gwen was back in town George rushed to the phone to call her. The couple was married on August 19, 1960. Gwen became a mother to Susann, George’s daughter, and they soon welcomed Bill as well. Gwen was an active member in the community and dedicated her life to volunteering. She volunteered with many organizations including the Brighton Community Hospital, Green Valley Grange, and the Adams County Jail, where she helped inmates learn to read. She also was a very active member in many organizations including PEO, Ester Circle, Eastern Star, and Rainbow Girls.

Gwen’s passions in life included love for family, friends, and card games. Other interests included live theater, classical music, water and snow skiing, and driving fast. One of her favorite sayings while driving was “Step out there honey, I’ll hit ya.” Gwen was known for “bumping” her vehicle into a number of objects. Above all else, Gwen was a devote Christian. She was a member of the Brighton United Methodist Church for 60 years.

Gwen is survived by daughter her Susann (John) Beug and her son Bill (Paula) Stieber; grandchildren Justin Beug, Jason Beug, Brandon Stieber, and Kayla Stieber Hladky; great-granddaughters Schaeffer and McKenna Beug; sisters Allison Sherman and Mary Ann Hood; and many nieces and nephews.
