May 26, 1941 – February 21, 2021

David M. Wherry, 79, of Lafayette passed away Sunday, February 21, 2021 at Life Care Center of Westminster in Colorado. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 6 at Tabor-Rice Funeral Home, Inc. in Brighton with Pastor Dave Christensen officiating.  Memorials may be made to Louisville United Methodist Church or Life Care Center of Westminster.

David Martin Wherry was born on May 26, 1941 in Denver, CO, the son of Jack C. and Adeline E. (Helmle) Wherry.  He married Jean (Jeanie) A. Walters June 24, 2001.  She preceded him in death on January 31, 2017.

Dave served in the U.S. Marine Corps in active duty and in active reserves. He was honorably discharged as a Lance Corporal on March 21, 1967. 

Dave attended North High School in Denver and Emily Griffith Opportunity School where he got his certificate on May 27, 1970.  He also attended Front Range Community College where he took Criminal Justice classes.  Dave graduated from Colorado Law Enforcement Training Academy in 1973. 

He started his career with the Adams County Sheriff’s Department on June 14, 1971.  He was promoted to Corporal on June 12, 1985 and then promoted again to Detective on April 29, 1996 before retiring on June 23, 2003. A Meritorious Achievement Award was given to Dave in December 1994.

Dave loved bowling, camping, fishing, wood carving, singing, playing guitar and helping coach his sons in football.  He also enjoyed time spent with his stepson, Jeffrey, working in the yard, playing Nascar video games and watching football together.

Survivors include his sons Lance C. Wherry and Monty C. (Jennifer) Wherry; stepson Jeffrey S. Marks and a stepdaughter; grandchildren, Raymond, Alexandra, Justin, Myra, Marbury, Caleb, Brandon and Ryan; great grandchildren, Liliana and Lucas.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Laura L. Mata and wife, Jeanie.

Many thanks go to the devoted staff at Life Care of Westminster and Denver Hospice for the loving care and compassion given to Dave.  We also want to give special thanks to Louisville United Methodist Church, Dave’s neighbors and friends who gave their love and support when Dave needed help.
